WHITEHEAD PIMPLES OVERVIEW

Although whiteheads could arguably be the least offensive form of acne, any outbreak is most unwanted. Each type of acne has its own set of rules when it comes to a treatment regimen.

Whitehead acne does not discriminate, it appears on the youthful skin that is 14 or the more mature skin of 50 years old. It also makes it home in the various skin colors. All it needs is the proper environment and formation will result.

WHAT ARE WHITE HEAD PIMPLES

In answer to that burning question of "what are whiteheads," they are dead skin cells and oil that is trapped under the skin's surface. When the skin's oily secretion, which is known as sebum is produced in proper quantities, it helps to keep the skin supple, smooth, moisturized and hydrated. However, when there is an excess production the pores become clogged and close, which ultimately results in inflammation and the whitehead forms.

Whiteheads are also called closed comedones or milia. These small bumps are white in color and look somewhat like pimples except they do not have a swollen, red appearance. Whereas you can easily squeeze out the contents of a pimple that is "ripe" for the pickin' this is an impossibility when it comes to whitehead acne.

Because white heads have a layer of skin over them, exposure to oxygen never occurs, thus the center remains white. With blackheads when the oil plug is exposed to the air, it will oxidize and the center turns black in color.

WHAT CAUSES WHITE HEAD PIMPLES?

For teens, when their hormones begin to rage and they produce higher amounts of androgens, the body begins to produce additional sebum. When these excess oils combine with the dead skin cells and clog the hair follicles, bacteria will begin to grow. The end result is non-inflammatory acne, which is either whiteheads or blackheads.

Teens aren't the only ones subject to fluctuating hormones. Women are at risk each month as their hormones do the dance of the menses.

WHERE DO WHITEHEAD PIMPLES APPEAR?

Whitehead acne usually appears on the face and shoulders, but it can also occur on the legs, buttocks, arms, back or chest. Regardless of where it rears its ugly heads, they are most unwanted!
