WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

If you have ever asked yourself, "What is a blackhead?", then you are not alone. Blackheads are a type of acne vulgaris and are also known as open comedones. They consist of a mass of hardened sebum (oil) and dead skin cells that are located inside of the hair follicles. Once the follicle becomes clogged and blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells, then a blackhead will form.

Whiteheads and blackheads are similar, however, blackheads tend to be larger and the top remains open, whereas a whitehead will be covered with skin.

Color of Blackheads

Blackheads have a darkened center. This happens when the open pores become blocked with sebum and dead skin cells and the material is exposed to the air. When the oxygen hits the oil, it causes oxidation, which in turn creates and gives the appearance of the yellow-brown or black center of the blackhead.

With acne, it is not unusual to contend with soreness, redness, and inflammatory flare-ups. Conversely, with blackheads, none of these characteristics are a concern. You generally notice a small black "mark" on your face and when you touch it you will notice a little bit of a solid area.

Where Blackheads Are Found

Blackheads tend to form in the T-zone because this area generally produces more oil. However, they can appear anywhere on the body. The T-zone is located across the center of the forehead, extends down the nose, and finishes at the chin. Blackheads especially may be found on and around the nose, but may also form on other areas of the face, along with the ears, back, chest, and shoulders.
