Salicylic acid treatments come in various strengths ranging from OTC to prescription strength of 0.5% to 35%. The higher concentrations are only used by physicians in chemical peels. In order for this product to be most effective, it is best to use at least a 1% to 2% concentration if your skin is able to tolerate it. Salicylic acid is found in various acne spot treatments, gels, creams, and foams.

SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS OF SALICYLIC ACID?

Over using this product can irritate the skin, cause flaking, and dryness. Generally, these symptoms resolve as your skin becomes used to this ingredient. In the meantime, scale back and use it every other day and be sure to use a water soluble moisturizer to rehydrate your skin accordingly.

Individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to aspirin should refrain from using any products that contain salicylic acid. In addition, when using any products that contain this ingredient you will want to be sure to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, as your skin will be more susceptible to burning.

The bottom line is that salicylic acid acne treatments are a preferred choice over and above benzoyl peroxide. The chance of irritation and other side effects is lessened, but the ultimate results are not.
