IPL LASER TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Treating acne with a pulsed light might be the answer for your inflammatory acne. The IPL laser targets the acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), which then destroys it with the pulsed light precision. This is what will ultimately prevent future acne breakouts. In addition, the IPL laser will penetrate deep into the sebaceous glands to slow down the overproduction of oil, which is what clogs the pores and causes breakouts.

If your interest is in having a laser treatment for acne scars, then an IPL laser might still be the answer. Pulses of laser light are used to coagulate the scar tissue and cause healthy tissue to form. The good news is that the healing time for this procedure is minimal, there is no risk of infection, and little to no pain is experienced.

IPL LASER TREATMENT PROCEDURE

For best results, having a glycolic peel before your IPL acne treatment will deliver better IPL results, as the peel eliminates the dead skin cells.

If pain is an issue, before the IPL acne treatment is performed, a topical numbing agent might be spread onto the area that will be treated. A patient can expect to experience a slight stinging sensation. Once numb, a cold gel will be spread on the area. The device is placed onto the skin and pulses of intense yellow, green, and red lights are then released in a series of short pulses. The yellow and green lights help to destroy the bacteria and the red light targets the overactive sebaceous glands. The process is repeated until the entire area is treated. Protective eyewear will be worn during the procedure.

The skin might remain somewhat pink or red, like a sunburn, for 2 to 24 hours. The skin can be soothed with ice or gel packs, or even frozen packages of peas. In addition, the IPL acne treatment can initially cause an acne flare-up and the blemishes may appear redder than what you are normally accustomed. However, in about two to three weeks they will fade away. Once the complete IPL treatment course has been completed, a patient can expect the breakouts to substantially subside.

IPL LASER TREATMENT COST

Generally, at least 3 treatments are necessary before a patient notices a significant improvement in their complexion. More often than not, 5 to 10 treatments are necessary to obtain optimal results. The treatments can be done on a monthly basis and a patient can expect their acne to go into remission for about six months. After this time the IPL process must be repeated.

Depending upon where you live, the cost for these treatments can range from $150 to $300 each. Most offices offer package deals, which will save a little money, when you purchase several treatments at one time.

HOW TO GET THE BEST RESULTS WITH AN IPL LASER TREATMENT

  • For best results, having a glycolic peel before an IPL acne treatment will render better results in the long run.

  • The best candidates for this procedure are those with mild to moderate acne.

  • IPL laser is not recommended for darker or tan skin, as pigmentation can be a problem.

  • If you are taking any acne medications or those that cause you to be sensitive to light, then you are not a candidate for an IPL acne treatment.
