A face mask will need to be applied to the face and neck when you are able to devote a little time to your skin care routine. It usually needs to remain on the face for anywhere from 10-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Therefore, plan your schedule accordingly.

One of the reasons for applying an acne mask is to help you in your quest to absorb excess oils, soothe irritated and inflamed skin, dislodge blackheads, while providing disinfectant properties.

Therefore, when deciding upon a particular acne mask, you will want to check the ingredients to see if it contains those ingredients that are known to help in the absorption of oils. For example, bentonite clay, carbon, charcoal, or magnesium aluminum silicate are all known for their absorption qualities. Clay and carbon also have some disinfection properties and the ability to help loosen up those pesky blackheads.

However, you also want to be sure that the mask does not ultimately cause your skin to feel tight because it is drying out too many of its natural oils. A balance must be struck between absorption of sufficient hydration so not to cause an adverse reaction.

Another consideration you will want to factor into when selecting an acne face mask is to steer clear of all products that contain fragrances and artificial colors. This will do nothing to improve your skin, but it can certain wreak havoc with sensitive skin and possibly cause some irritation and/or inflammation.

In addition, be sure to not select a product that contains ingredients that are known for a high probability of causing irritation to the skin. For example, the demon alcohol tops the list with peppermint and menthol following in a close second.

Remember to factor in your skin type when you make the decision to use an acne face mask. A person who has slightly oily skin should not over-mask so to speak, as this could dry out the skin. If you have very oily skin, you might find it necessary to do face masks a few times a week. However, you will want to start this process slowly to avoid adverse consequences. Start by applying the acne mask one time a week for 2-3 weeks to see if your skin responds in a positive fashion. If all goes well, you can then add a second mask application per week and once again monitor the results.
