The blue light therapy for acne is probably the best-known "laser" treatment for moderate acne. However, technically it is not an actual laser, but rather a warm blue light that will open up the pores and kill off acne-causing bacteria. Your physician will have you sit in front of the blue light for about 15 minutes. Patients usually receive eight 15-minute sessions of blue light therapy for acne, over a four-week period of time for the treatment of moderate acne. However, your dermatologist may adjust this treatment plan in accordance with the severity of your acne as will be determined when your acne profile is reviewed.

The side effects from blue light therapy might be dryness, slight swelling of the treated areas, a bit of redness, and perhaps a slight change in your skin's pigment. The blue light will not harm the surrounding tissues and basically is a gentle procedure.

• The best candidates for this procedure are those with mild to moderate acne.

• This procedure is most effective on inflammatory acne.

• If you are taking any acne medications or other medications that cause you to be sensitive to light, then you are not a candidate for blue light therapy for acne.

• Although this procedure will probably not do much for nodular or cystic acne, a blue light therapy for acne treatment will kill off the acne-causing bacteria, which in turn will reduce future outbreaks.
