WHAT IS AN ASPIRIN FACE MASK?

The aspirin mask is a homemade facial mask that works great for acneic skin. It may also be used on normal, combination or oily skin.

The main ingredient of this mask is aspirin tablets, which consists of a white crystalline compound that is derived from salicylic acid. Aspirin is a great OTC therapy for inflammation. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid--BHA that is best known for its use in acne treatment products. BHA's help to clean the pores thoroughly, along with healing blemishes quicker.

The mask will help to loosen the sebum that clogs the pores, remove the dead skin cells that blocks the pores, and reduces inflammation.

SPOT TREAT ZITS

Getting ready to go out on the town and feeling tempted to pop that zit, spot treat it instead with our friend the aspirin. Crush one aspirin and add a couple of drops of water. Apply the paste to that pesky zit, cover it with a Band-Aid or use a piece of gauze and adhesive tape. Leave it on for 30-60 minutes and then rinse the area with warm water. Reduction of the redness and inflammation will be the end result. However, it may not last but a few hours, which might be all that is necessary for that special date.

RECIPES FOR ASPIRIN FACE MASK

There are numerous recipes for creating an aspirin face mask. Be sure to select plain, uncoated aspirin for your mask. This will insure that there are no preservatives, additives, chemicals, colors, etc., which could reduce the effectiveness of the mask. This mask may also be applied to the neck, shoulder, chest, or back. The following are a few of the more popular versions:

Aspirin & Lemon Juice Mask

  • Non-coated aspirin
  • Fresh Squeezed lemon juice
  • Baking soda

Using a mortar and pestle, smash 2-3 aspirin and combine with lemon juice. As aspirin dissolves, it will turn into a paste. Apply the mask to the face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Wash the mask off using cotton pads dipped in baking soda and water mixture. Splash face with cool water and moisturize.

Aspirin & Water Mask

Using a mortar and pestle, smash 2-3 aspirin and combine with water. As aspirin dissolves, smash it into a paste. Apply the mask to the face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Gently massage the mask off the face to reap the benefits of it serving as an exfoliant. Wash the remaining mask off the face and follow with a light moisturizer.

Aspirin & Aloe Vera Mask

Using a mortar and pestle, smash 2-3 aspirin and combine with aloe vera. As the aspirin dissolves, smash it into a paste. Apply the mask to the face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Gently massage the mask off the face to reap the benefits of it serving as an exfoliant. Follow with a light moisturizer.

Aspirin & Honey Mask

Using a mortar and pestle, smash 2-3 aspirin and combine with water to dissolve the aspirin and then add about a tablespoon of honey for every two aspirins used. Let the mixture stand for about 3 minutes and then apply to the face. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse mask off the face using lukewarm water. Conclude with a splash of cool water. The downside of this mask is that it is one messy mess!

Feel free to add a drop of lavender essential oil to any of the above masks, as lavender has natural antibacterial properties and promotes the health of the skin.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING AN ASPIRIN FACE MASK

  • Do not apply the mask near the eyes, as it may be irritating, especially if a person has sensitive skin or is wearing contacts.

  • When crushing the aspirins, be careful not to inhale the aspirin powder or a major sneeze attack may result.

  • Salicylic acid may cause an irritation of the skin.

  • Anyone with an aspirin allergy should steer clear of this mask. Don't think it's only on the skin's surface, therefore, it won't be a problem--it will.

  • A good rule of thumb with any aspirin mask is that a little goes a long way. Don't overdue; once to twice a week is plenty. Otherwise, you might damage the skin and cause it to become hypersensitive.
