ADULT MALE ACNE OVERVIEW
CAUSE OF ADULT MALE ACNE For men, acne has its roots in the male hormones and testosterone certainly plays a role in the eventual outbreak of acne. These hormones stimulate the skin's oil-producing glands, known as the sebaceous glands, which results in an excessive amount of oil called sebum. Oftentimes, sebum combines with the dead skin cells on the face, thus clogging the pores and hair follicles and ultimately producing blackheads and whiteheads. In addition, oily skin provides a good environment for bacteria to thrive, which results in the creation of pustules (pimples with pus), inflammation and infection. WHAT IS FOLLICULITIS Improper shaving may cause folliculitis, which is a fancy name for ingrown hairs. It can be a big problem for men, particularly in cases where they have got wiry beard hair or a very coarse beard. Whenever folliculitis happens, the hair grows somewhat below the skin's surface and becomes trapped, thus triggering a bacterial infection. In addition, folliculitis is frequently accompanied by pus and inflammation. This condition is more prevalent among African Americans and Hispanics, as their hair tends to curl up under the skin. This results in an infection pocket being created. Razor bumps are also known as pseudofolliculitis. It looks like folliculitis, except it does not have any pus. Improper shaving is also the culprit for this condition. The objective when treating this problem is to relieve the inflammation and irritation and disinfect and dry up the pustules. ADULT MALE ACNE AND ANABOLIC STEROIDS Anabolic steroids are powerful drugs that increase the testosterone level. When a body produces excessive amounts of testosterone, this causes the oil glands to in turn produce excess oils. The excess oils clog the pores and adult male acne results. Steroids, are often times used by bodybuilders and athletes to increase muscle mass, are a major cause of acne in about one-third of its users. About half of these men develop the most severe form of acne, known as cystic acne. Generally, the acne that results from steroid usage forms on the chest and back, but it can develop anywhere on the body.
